Turkmen, Afghan presidents mull TAPI project

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov and President of Afghanistan Mohammad Ashraf Ghani exchanged views on further development of bilateral relations during a phone conversation, the Turkmen government said in a message.

The practical implementation of the construction project of Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India (TAPI) gas pipeline became a subject to separate discussion.

Construction of the Turkmen section of TAPI was launched on Dec. 13, 2015.

The annual capacity of the gas pipeline will reach 33 billion cubic meters.

The total length of the TAPI pipeline will be 1,814 kilometers. A 214-kilometer section of the pipeline will run through Turkmenistan, a 774-kilometer section will run through Afghanistan and an 826-kilometer section will run through Pakistan.

The sphere of trade and economy, as well as fuel and energy, electric power engineering and other industries were also mentioned among the priority areas of cooperation between Turkmenistan and Afghanistan.

The sides also exchanged views on the issues of common interest regarding regional and international policy. During the meeting, the Turkmen president invited his Afghan counterpart to visit Turkmenistan, according to the message.

In turn, the Afghan president congratulated Berdimuhamedov on his victory in the presidential election held Feb. 12, 2017, and wished him success.
