Turkmenistan and Belarus are discussing the prospects of economic cooperation as part of meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission being held in Minsk (on May 10-12), the Belarusian government said in a message May 11.

According to Deputy Prime Minister of Belarus Anatoly Kalinin, the two countries intend to bring the trade turnover up to $500 million.

In 2016, trade turnover between Belarus and Turkmenistan exceeded $120 million, and together with services amounted to almost $300 million.

During the meeting of the intergovernmental commission, the parties discussed the supply of Stadler products – diesel trains, medical equipment, medicines, goods of industrial brands to Turkmenistan.

According to the deputy prime minister, the two sides discussed possible commodity-exchange operations acceptable for both countries.

“The Turkmen side, having large deposits of potash fertilizers, has announced a tender for the construction of a plant... Our specialists will study the project, prepare proposals and make a relevant decision, which we will designate before the Turkmen side,” noted Kalinin.

An agreement was reached on the development of cooperation in the field of road and rail communication. In particular, Belarus is interested in increasing the supply of railway cars to Turkmenistan.
