Uzbekistan, UK discuss situation in Afghanistan

Leadership of the Foreign Ministry of Uzbekistan discussed issues of bilateral relations with the UK's Special Envoy on Afghanistan and Pakistan Mark Sedwill on Tuesday, Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Sedwill arrived in Tashkent for regular bilateral consultations.

British Ambassador Rupert Joy also attended the conversation.

"The sides exchanged views on the Afghan problem," a brief statement of the Foreign Ministry says.

Official London pays great attention to cooperation on ensuring stability in Afghanistan. Last year, representatives of the General Staff of the UK Armed Forces repeatedly visited Tashkent, during which regional and international issues were discussed with the government representatives. In particular, in February 2012, British Defence Secretary Philip Hammond paid an official visit to Uzbekistan. Then President Islam Karimov received him and he held talks at the Defense Ministry of the Republic, where he discussed the current state and prospects of bilateral military and military-technical cooperation, as well as issues of regional security and stability, settlement of the situation in Afghanistan.

According to NATO, so far the North Atlantic Treaty Organization has signed agreements with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan on the overland transit of goods and equipment that will be withdrawn from Afghanistan upon completion of combat operations in the country through their territory.

Earlier, NATO signed an agreement of the same content also with Russia.
