UK state minister to pay next visit to Uzbekistan

Senior Minister of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland Baroness Saeeda Warsi will arrive in Tashkent on April 15 as part of the regular Uzbek-British contacts, Uzbek Foreign Ministry said.

The visit program of UK Foreign Ministry representative includes bilateral meetings and negotiations at the Senate (the upper house of Uzbek parliament), at the Cabinet of Ministers, Foreign Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Economic Relations and the Ministry of Investments and Trade.

The previous visit of Warsi to Uzbekistan took place in June 2013. During that visit, Warsi held negotiations with the first Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan, Rustam Azimov, First Deputy Defense Minister, Major-General Viktor Mahmudov, Deputy Prime Minister, Chairperson of the Uzbek Women's Committee, Elmira Basithanova, as well as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Senator Sadiq Safayev

During the talks they discussed the development of trade, economic and inter-parliamentary cooperation, reforms implemented in the country to improve the socio-political activity of women, to strengthen their health and to protect motherhood and childhood, as well as issues of regional security.

Warsi also met with her Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov and discussed the state and prospects for the Uzbek-British dialogue and topical international and regional issues.

Moreover, Baroness Warsi held a number of meetings with representatives of civil society, international organizations, as well as British companies operating in Uzbekistan.

During the visit, the minister visited Khiva where she met with representatives of local authorities and went sightseeing.

Baroness Warsi was appointed Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Minister for Faith and Communities at the Department for Communities and Local Government in September 2012.

Baroness Warsi oversees the development of relations with Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Central Asian countries, human rights, cooperation with international organizations and the International Criminal Court, as well as all aspects related to the activities of the British Foreign Ministry in the House of Lords.

Baroness Warsi visited Uzbekistan in April 2012 as a member of the Cabinet of Ministers and co-chairperson of the British Conservative Party.

Great Britain is one of the most important economic partners of Uzbekistan in Europe. Some 419 companies with British capital successfully operate in the country. Representative offices of 95 companies have been accredited there. Westminster International University in Tashkent plays an important role in strengthening Uzbekistan's human resource. Joint activities with Cambridge University are underway to establish a High Technology Center in Tashkent.
