Uzbek president to attend SCO summit

Uzbek President Islam Karimov will participate in a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), to be held in the capital of Tajikistan - Dushanbe on September 11-12, 2014, the presidential press-service said.

"The presidents of the SCO member-states will discuss the prospects of further improvement of the organization's activity, the regional security, intensifying the economic and investment cooperation, cooperation in transport and communication sphere and other issues of mutual interest," according to a statement.

Besides the presidents of the SCO member-states, the representatives of the SCO observer-countries under the SCO and dialogue partners of the SCO, as well as the UN and other international organizations with which the SCO maintains formal relations of cooperation were invited for the summit.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization was established in Shanghai in 2001. At present, SCO members are Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Iran, India, Pakistan and Mongolia have an observer status. The dialogue partners are Belarus and Sri Lanka.
