Uzbek president calls on to continue reforms in country

Uzbek President Islam Karimov named acceleration and increase of efficiency of democratic reforms the most important tasks on the way to the further development of Uzbekistan.

He made the remarks speaking at a joint session of the Oliy Majlis (parliament), where he took an oath, having become president of Uzbekistan.

In his speech, the text of which was published in the national media on Apr.11, Islam Karimov said that huge success has been achieved as a result of large-scale changes and reforms in the country. He stressed the need to further intensify the large-scale reforms being implemented in the economy.

Karimov called the key objective the elimination of barriers and constraints on the way to the development of private property and private entrepreneurship, reduce of the level of state presence in the economy.

"We must reduce the share and the level of state presence in the economy to strategically and economically reasonable sizes," said Islam Karimov.

The president also proposed to make the appropriate adjustments in the activities of corporate or joint stock associations taking into account the experience of leading foreign firms and companies.

"We are open for further development of cooperation with foreign countries and companies, we are ready to create new, broader conditions and opportunities for this," said the head of state.

Some 90.39 percent of electors voted for Islam Karimov, according to the results of presidential election held in Uzbekistan March 29.
