Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov signed a decree appointing Ikhtiyer Abdullayev the country's prosecutor general.

Prior to the appointment as the prosecutor general, Abdullayev worked as a state advisor to the president.

The presidential decree was adopted in connection with the termination of the constitutional term of office of the previous prosecutor general, Rashitzhon Kadyrov.

Kadyrov has served as the prosecutor general for three terms since February 2000.

Under the legislation of Uzbekistan, the prosecutor general is appointed and dismissed by the president.

The president's decrees on the appointment and dismissal of the prosecutor general and deputies are approved by the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (upper house of parliament) of Uzbekistan.
