Uzbekistan plans to implement projects for developing the electricity sphere in 2016-2022, Ravshan Artikov, head of the energy development department of Uzbekenergo state joint-stock company said.

He made the remarks during the international exhibition UzEnergoExpo-2015 in Tashkent.

Artikov pointed out that the total cost of these projects is $5.6 billion.

Currently, Uzbekenergo is working out a program for implementing new projects for the next six years, he said.

The program is expected to include projects for constructing new and modernizing the current generating facilities by increasing their capacity by 3,820 megawatts, including thermal energy - by 3,700 megawatts, hydropower - 22.5 megawatts, alternative energy, first of all, solar energy - 200 megawatts.

The company plans to construct a new thermal power plant with the capacity of 900 megawatts in Syrdarya province in the country's center, to complete the modernization of two thermal power plants by increasing their capacity by 1,800 megawatts by 2021, as well as to construct two photovoltaic power plants with the total capacity of 200 megawatts in the country's east and south.

The program also includes the projects for constructing 795 kilometers long power transmission lines of 220-500 kilowatt and for modernizing the electricity accounting system in the regions.

It is planned to finance the program with direct foreign investments and loans from international financial organizations totaling $3.14 billion, own funds of Uzbekenergo worth $1.4 billion and loans from the Reconstruction and Development Fund of Uzbekistan worth $1.1 billion.

Currently, 45 power plants with the capacity of over 12,400 megawatts, including 16 power plants of Uzbekenergo with the total capacity of 12,040 megawatts, operate in Uzbekistan's power supply system.

Up to 90 percent of electricity is produced by 10 thermal power plants of Uzbekenergo with the total installed capacity of 10.6 million kilowatts. The company's 29 hydropower plants with the installed capacity of 1.4 million kilowatts are mostly united within hydropower plant cascades.

The potential of electricity production in Uzbekistan is 56-57 billion kilowatt hours. Uzbekenergo's divisions generated around 55 billion kilowatt hours of electricity in 2014, according to the company's data.
