ODIHR election department head arrives in Uzbekistan

Head of the Election Department of the OSCE's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR) Alexander Shlyk has arrived in Uzbekistan, the press service of the country’s Central Election Commission (CEC) reported Oct. 12.

Specialists of the Needs Assessment Mission (NAM) headed by Alexander Shlyk (Belarus) and OSCE/ODIHR Election Advisor Ulvi Akhundlu (Azerbaijan) will study the pre-election situation in Uzbekistan, according to the CEC.

They will also meet with the leadership of the Uzbek Foreign Affairs Ministry, the Central Election Commission, the Supreme Court, Ministry of Justice, the upper house of the Uzbek parliament as well as other institutions October 11-14, 2016, the country’s CEC reported.

“Following the meetings, the NAM will elaborate its conclusion, which will reflect such criteria as availability of minimum conditions for an effective, reliable and professional observation of election, political pluralism, transparency and the Uzbek society’s confidence in the electoral process, as well as the implementation of the ODIHR recommendations offered as a result of monitoring the previous election,” said the message.

Uzbekistan will hold an early presidential election Dec. 4. The election will be held in accordance with the country’s constitution due to the death of President Islam Karimov.
