Iran and Germany want broader ties, elimination of obstacles

Iran's Interim Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and visiting German Deputy Foreign Minister Wolf Ruthart Born in a meeting Wednesday expressed will for elimination of obstacles and expansion of bilateral relations.

According to IRNA Wednesday night service, the Foreign Ministry quoted Salehi as referring in the meeting to the old history of the two countries' political and cultural relations, adding, "We hope Germany would act independently in its foreign policy and expand its relation with the Islamic Republic of Iran, taking full advantage of the emerged situation.

Salehi criticized the ultra UN resolution approach of the EU against Iran in the meeting, arguing, "We have always been after the elimination of the obstacles and the expansion of relations despite the ups and downs in the two countries' long record of relations, and we still hope for comprehensive expansion of ties and cooperation free from obstacles."

The German official, for his part, stressed the importance of expanding mutual ties between the two nations.

Ruthart also met with his Iranian counterpart Mehdi Akhoundzadeh earlier in the day to discuss issues pertaining to nuclear non-proliferation.

"Iran seeks global nuclear disarmament and has pioneered a new movement in this area. After our first summit (on nuclear non-proliferation) was noticeably welcomed by the international community we will hold a more comprehensive international summit for a second time in Tehran in the near future," the Iranian official said.

Akhoundzadeh also criticized the Western countries for their double standards on issues such as human rights and nuclear non-proliferation and emphasized that dialogue is the only way to overcome disputes.
