Afghanistan and Iran's annual trade totaled more than $2 billion (USD) in the last Iranian year, which ended on March 19, a 50 percent increase from the year before.

In 2010/2011, the two neighbors' commercial exchanges were worth $1.3 billion with most of that made up of Iran's exports to Afghanistan, Mehr news agency reports.

The figures were given by the Governor of Sistan and Baluchistan Province, Ali Mohammad Azad, at a meeting held by the Iran, Pakistan and Afghanistan economic working group.

Afghanistan exports about $10 million in goods to Iran.

Iranian businessmen have neglected the market that exists with Pakistan's population of 180 million people, said Mr. Azad.

As the three neighbors work to expand their trade ties, the Sistan and Baluchistan Province can play a key role with its transit capacities, multiple customs checkpoints and Iran's only ocean port.
