The first Iranian-owned fibre optic line was inaugurated at the Sea of Oman.

The $50 million (USD) fibre optic line was one of four major projects undertaken by the Pishgaman group last year, the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) reports.

The Pishgaman group is 'the only IT co-operative in Iran' according to its own introduction. The Oman Sea fibre optic line was just the first step in its 'golden ring' project to create a high-tech communication circle.

EPEG project originates in Oman and will be routed to Frankfurt. It is supposed to pass through the territory of four countries (Iran, Azerbaijan, Poland and Ukraine).

The bandwidth will reach about 3.2 Tbps, and its length will extend to 6000 kilometres. The preliminary project cost is more than $200 million and laying the cable is expected to be launched in May 2012.

The cost of construction of the Azerbaijani section of the EPEG fibre-optic cable line is estimated at more than three million euros. The Alcatel-Lucent Company is the provider of telecommunications equipment for the construction of the Azerbaijani segment of the cable line.
