Iran's Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said that the real winner of the bloodshed in Syria is Israel who sits in a corner watching the Syrian people being killed by terrorists, Fars News Agency reported on Dec 18.

Vahidi said Syria is the resistance frontier against Zionists and Israel is now quietly eyeing the clashes in Syria.

The internal war between Bashar Assad government and opposition rebels has been on-going since January 2011, leaving over 30, 000 dead. Iran and Russia are the Syrian government's major allies.

About 135 world states have recognised the opposition, led by Moaz al-Khatib as the Syrians only legal representative.

Responding to a question about deployment of NATO's Patriot missiles in Turkey, Vahidi said that Iran does not consider this act constructive and the existence of the West in the region is against regional nations' interests.

However, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Monday rejected Iranian criticism of the alliance's deployment of Patriot missiles to defend Turkey against cross-border attacks from Syria.

The United States, Germany and the Netherlands are to provide Patriot batteries for the NATO mission. Patriots have been deployed twice in Turkey in 1991 and 2003 when the United States was on the verge of launching strikes on Iraq.

The Syrian government has chemical weapons and Turkey requested NATO to deploy defence systems to protect alliance member Turkey.
