FM spokesman: Iran-Argentina agreement on Amia sent to Majlis

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said the bill on an agreement between Iran and Argentina to form a fact-finding committee to investigate Amia case was presented to the parliament, IRNA reported.

He told IRNA on Sunday that the bill needs to be ratified by the parliament before it becomes operational.

He explained the bill has already been approved by the Argentina parliament and the country's president has endorsed its law.

The spokesman had already noted that the Iranian officials are by no means concerned over bilateral agreement with Argentina aimed at settling the AMIA issue.

Iran's Foreign Minister, Ali-Akbar Salehi, too, said that Iran and Argentina adhered to provisions of the agreement on AMIA case.

He said the two countries have signed an agreement on settlement of Amia case and the two sides are committed to it.

Salehi said 19 years passed since terrorist attack on Argentine Jewish center and that wide-scale efforts have been made to settle the case.

He noted that to settle the case, "Iran held meetings for two years with Argentinian Foreign Minister Hector Marcos Timerman. The contacts and meetings culminated in a nine-point agreement which focused on settlement of related problems. The agreement serves as basis for our entry to settlement of Amia case."

The Islamic Republic of Iran condemned the terrorist attack against Jewish center in Buenos Aires in 1994, killing 84 people.

Iran says Tel Aviv operatives were involved in terror attack to wield influence over the then government of Buenos Aires. Israel, in line with its enmity, accused Iran of the attack.
