IRI President: Venezuela is harbinger of new move in Latin America

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday said a huge popular wave has been shaped in Latin America and Venezuela is today the harbinger of a new move in the region, IRNA reported.

Speaking to reporters after returning from Venezuela, President Ahmadinejad said there is convergence and deep sincerity between people of Latin America and Iran.

He said people and the Chavez government have done a huge task.

The president went on to say that in the past, any revolution by Latin American people, was suppressed by arrogant powers and once the late president of Venezuela Hugo Chavez came to power, the global arrogance failed to continue its aggression against the region.

He said Chavez had an exemplary faith in standing up to arrogant powers and he managed to cut off the hands of the global arrogance.

Also touching on successful elections in Venezuela, he said many people tried in vain to eliminate the ideology of Chavez and the popular revolution from Latin America's political scene and the elections were held more gloriously despite plots and pressures of "arrogant powers".

"We too took part in the swearing-in ceremony of the new president and mourning ceremony of Chavez and voiced our solidarity."

The president said "Fortunately, relations between Iran and Latin American states are growing and I wished the media could cover public sentiments and depict the depth of public emotions in Latin America."

Stressing that relations between the Iranian and Venezuelan people will continue, Ahmadinejad said Venezuela would continue treading the path of justice and "we too will stand by Venezuela and other justice seeking nations of the world."

Ahmadinejad said meetings were held with certain Venezuelan officials.

Today, we are proud of signing very good agreements with such countries, as Venezuela in the fields of economy, science and technology and that would provide a very good opportunity for consolidation of bilateral relations, said the president.

Ahmadineajd said Latin American people are the most oppressed nations worldwide.

He also slammed certain American officials for calling Latin America their backyard. This is an insult to the independent nations of the world.

He said "God willing, we should strive for development and progress of all the freedom loving nations of the world."
