The deputy Iranian foreign minister said the presence of the Iranian Navy in the Caspian Sea is within the country's legal rights and is meant to threaten no one, Iran's Young Journalist Club reported on May 7.

The Jamaran 2 destroyer produced by the Iranian navy was delivered to the Iranian navy on the Caspian Sea on March 17.

Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister in Legal Affairs Mohammad-Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said that since the legal order over the Caspian Sea has been prevalent for 16 years, we would like to make changes to the working so that we could get results more quickly. He did not mention the details of Iran's demands.

He added "Our fleet in the Caspian Sea is growing in size. More than 602 Iranian merchant ships sail there. We encourage private, tourist ships as well. Our first private dock has been built at Astara. Before the revolution the Caspian Sea capacities were totally overlooked, but things are growing now."

Akhondzadeh also said "Iran's share is no less than the Russian Federation's. According to consideration and 1921 and 1940 agreements which call the sea one of both Iran and Russia with no borders and only a general suggestion, Iran's share in the Caspian Sea is perfectly clear."

In July 1998, Russia and Kazakhstan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the northern part of the Caspian Sea in order to exercise sovereign rights for subsoil use.

On Nov. 29, 2001 and Feb.27, 2003, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan signed an agreement on the delimitation of the Caspian Sea.

Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Russia signed an agreement on the delimitation of adjacent sections of the Caspian Sea on May 14, 2003.

Iran and Turkmenistan don't recognise the legality of signed agreements saying all five countries should agree on delimitation of the sea.
