The Guardian Council might approve as many as 40 presidential candidates for the June 14 election, the Council's spokesman said on Sunday.

Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei said that the council is still going through the paperwork of a handful of hopefuls and might decide to invite them to the Council to explain their future policies and plans, the Fars News Agency reported.

The body will vet those who have signed up for the race irrespective of their political background, he explained.

The spokesman noted that under the electoral legislation, no one is allowed to start campaigning before getting the green light from the council.

The Guardian Council is expected to submit the final list of the approved candidates to the Interior Ministry on Tuesday. The Ministry will then have two days to announce the names of the final candidates.

The presidential election in Iran will be held on June 14.
