Iran and Jakarta signed a trade and economic memorandum of understanding in Tehran on Wednesday.

Iranian Deputy Industry, Mine, and Trade Minister Hamid Safdel and Deputy Foreign Minister of Indonesia Yuri Octavian Thamrin signed the MoU, the IRIB News Agency reported.

The MoU aims at boosting the two countries bilateral trades.

By signing a preferential trade agreement the two countries can further boost their bilateral trades, Safdel said.

Tehran and Jakarta's bilateral trade value was around one billion dollars in the past few years, the IRIB reported.

Thamrin also held a meeting with the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Salehi.

During the meeting said that Tehran appreciates the stands adopted by Jakarta at international organizations, adding that Indonesia is an important country in the world.

The Iranian FM also expressed satisfaction over the present status of the bilateral relations, calling on both sides to take advantage of the entire existing capacities in political, economic and cultural fields.

He said that the two countries' merchants and businessmen can serve well in boosting our economic ties.

The Indonesian deputy foreign minister, for his part, referred to the role of Iran in the region and the world, welcoming the proposal for further broadening of the bilateral relations.

He confirmed Salehi's comments on the potential role that the two countries' merchants and businessmen can play in boosting the bilateral economic ties, reiterating that the issue would be pursued at Jakarta.
