Iran has started implementing a plan to provide diesel fuel to borderers in order to be sold to customers in the neighboring countries, IRNA quoted Director General of the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company Mostafa Kashkouli as saying.

"In the first step, borderers in Hirmand and Saravan cities [in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan] have been provided with diesel fuel," he added.

He referred to the plan as a step toward creating jobs for people and curb fuel smuggling.

Each liter of diesel fuel is delivered to borderers at 23,000 rials and they sell it 30,000 rials per liter.

"Some 12 million liters of diesel fuel is supplied to the borderers per month," he said.

Previously, Kashkouli said Iran has formed a special committee to curb fuel smuggling.

Fuel smuggling at border areas is decreasing, he noted. The committee is tasked with preventing illegal exports of fuel, he added.

On March 3, the Mehr News Agency quoted Iran's National Police Chief Esmaeil Ahmadi-Moqaddam as saying that some $6.5 million worth of fuels smuggled into Iran per day.

More than four million liters of smuggled fuel were discovered and seized in southeastern part of Iran during the first eleven months of the past Iranian calendar year, which ended on March 20.

Before 2009 Iran relied on 40 percent of its 72-million litres of gasoline consumption on imports, while the smuggled fuel amount from the country to abroad was about 10 million litres per day, including four million litres of gasoline and six million litres of gas-oil.
