Some 3,000 Iranian citizens are jailed in foreign countries, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Hassan Ghashghavi said, IRNA news agency reported.

Some 80 percent of Iranian abroad prisoners were convicted of drug smuggling crimes, he said. Qashghavi noted that last year about 800 Iranian prisoners which jailed abroad have been released due to Iran's foreign ministry's attempts, adding that, this would repeat current year.

At the same time, Indonesian Ambassador to Tehran Dian Wirengjurit a few days ago said that some 5,000 of Iran citizens are jailed in Indonesia due to attempting illegal entry to Australia, as well as another 500 Iranian citizens are in prison on charges of drug smuggling, with 47 of them being sentenced to death.

Qashghavi said that, Iran's foreign Ministry asked Iran's embassy in Jakarta to investigate the issue, adding that, Iran officials in Tehran and Jakarta are in touch with Indonesian officials about Iranian prisoners in Indonesia.
