Raw chicken meat on Iran markets contains toxic heavy metals

Raw chicken meat in the capital city of Tehran's markets contain carcinogen heavy metals, director of Vegetable and Fruit Marketplaces of Tehran Municipality, Hossein Safaei said, Iranian Bahar newspaper reported.

He went on to note that the level of lead in raw chicken mean exceeds the normal limit by about 47.8 percent.

"About 17.4 percent of the raw chicken meat contain unauthorized levels of the cadmium and nitrate," Safaei added.

He also expressed concern about high level of carcinogens in vegetables which being sold in Tehran markets.

In August, Iranian media outlets quoted vice chairman of the association of Iranian rice growers Ali Akbarian as saying the rice which is imported from India and Pakistan into Iran is contaminated with arsenic.

A member of Iran's Parliament (Majlis) Health Commission, Hassan Tamini said on June 2 that some of the imported rice is certainly contaminated with chemicals like arsenic.

Previously Massoumeh Ebtekar, the then sitting Chairperson of the Tehran City Council Environmental Commission had confirmed that imported rice are contaminated with arsenic.
