The Gas Exporting Countries Forum can play an effective role in global decision-makings, Iranian president Hassan Rouhani said, the ISNA News Agency reported.
Rouhani stressed on the importance of gas in development of countries, as well as expanding use of clean energy worldwide, the ISNA News Agency reported.
Rouhani made the remarks at the 15th ministerial meeting of the forum.
He also expressed hope that as the new secretary general of the forum, Iran could play an effective role in coordinating the GECF's politics and goals.
15th ministerial meeting of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum (GECF) was held on November 3, in Iran's capital city of Tehran.
GECF`s financial and administrative issues as well as budget for 2014 were discussed during the meeting.
The forum is a multi-layered and an intergovernmental organization of the world's leading natural gas producers comprising Algeria, Bolivia, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Iran, Libya, Nigeria, Oman, Qatar, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
Kazakhstan, Iraq, the Netherlands and Norway have the status of observer members.
The first GECF summit meeting was held in the Qatari capital of Doha on November 15, 2011.
The GECF was founded in 2001 in Tehran, and its member states control over 70 percent of the world's natural gas reserves as well as more than 80 percent of the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production.
