Rouhani: Mismanagement of Iran's agricultural sector leads to devastating effects

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that in the agriculture sector, which has always been under the government's support, mismanagement led to devastating effects, Iran's TV channel 1 reported on Nov. 26.

During an interview with the channel, Rouhani presented a report on the first 100 days of its administration, briefing the Iranian nation on the country's political and economic situation.

According to Rouhani, between 2000 and 2005, the country's wheat imports decreased by one million tons each year and the same amount was added to domestic purchase.

In a move to reach self-sufficiency in production of wheat, Rouhani said Iranian government increased domestic wheat purchase from 5.5 million tons in 2001 to 11 million tons in 2005, and imports fell from 6.8 million tons in 2000 to 0.1 million ton in 2004.

However, Rouhani said that later, between 2005 and 2012, the trend has reversed, and domestic wheat purchase decreased annually by one million tons and the same amount was added to imports.

"Domestic purchase of wheat fell from 11.4 million tons in 2005 to 2.2 million tons in 2012. Imports surged from 0.1 million tons in 2005 to 6.8 million tons in 2012, and the figure is forecasted to hit 7.2 million tons in 2013", Rouhani said.

Report of Iranian Customs Administration said Iran imported about 3.497 million tones of wheat during first seven month of Iranian solar year, which started on March 21.
