Iran's national e-mail service has failed to attract expected subscribers, managing director of the Iran Post Company, Hossein Mehri said, Iranian Mehr news agency reported on Feb. 6.
Mehri went on to say that, some 50,000 people have subscribed to the national e-mail service, while its capacity is about 600,000 subscribers.
Iran's Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) started national e-mail service on July 8, 2013. In this service e-mail addresses are assigned for each Iranian citizen (based on national identification number) or private and state organizations.
Subscribers of the service can receive messages from government organizations or individuals.
For the time being, about 50 megabytes of space have been allocated for each subscriber, but the administration plans to increase the figure to 2 gigabytes.
"We plan to improve and update the capabilities of the service to develop it," Mehri said without unveiling further details.
The subscription process for the service also will be facilitated, he said, adding that the capacity of the service will be increased to 20 million subscribers in the future.
According to the Internet Penetration Management Portal which is part of Iran's Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, the number of Internet users by the end of the last Iranian calendar year (ended on March 21, 2013) reached 45.884 million.
The figure indicates the Internet penetration rate of the country stood at 61.06 percent by the end of the last Iranian calendar year.
About 22.629 million of internet users in Iran have used GPRS service to access the Internet over the same period.
