Seyyed Ahmad Jalili, the head of Iranian Psychiatrist Association, said that 34 percent of the residents of Iranian capital, Tehran, have mental problems.

"The rate of mental illness and depression among Iranians stand at 21-25 percent," he said, Iran's ISNA News Agency reported on June 20.

"The depression rate in the whole world is around 20-25 percent," he added.

He went on to not that depression is more common among the elderly.

He further warned about the high rate of mental disorders and depression among college students.

"The high cost of mental cares in Iran will limit the access of people to proper medical services," he said.
