U.S. MILITARY RELEASES 1,000 PRISONERS IN IRAQ

Iran Materials 27 August 2005 12:02 (UTC +04:00)

(Reuters) - The U.S. military said on Saturday it had freed 1,000 detainees from Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison at the Baghdad government's request, the largest release to date.

It was not clear if the decision was linked to a demand by Sunnis negotiating the writing of a draft constitution that the authorities release Sunni prisoners so they can participate in a referendum and elections later this year.
