Iran plans to increase the efficiency of its power plants to 42 percent in the next four years from the current level of 37.5 percent, Deputy Energy Minister, Houshang Falahatian said.

While explaining the issue, Falahatian said that the Islamic Republic has planned to turn several gas power plants with the capacity to produce 17,000 megawatt of electricity into combined cycle plants, Iran's Fars news agency reported Sept. 18.

The efficiency of a plant is the percentage of the total energy content of a power plant's fuel that is converted into electricity. The remaining energy is usually lost to the environment as heat.

Iran's total electricity generation capacity has surpassed 71,000 megawatts recently.

The power generation capacity in Iran has grown by 7 percent annually during the past 10 years.

Falahatian also underlined that over 80 percent of Iran's electricity is being produced by private sector.

According to the Iran's Energy Ministry's annual report, the country produced 263 billion kilowatt hours(KWh) of electricity, while it exported above 11.7 billion KWh and imported 3.7 billion KWh during the last fiscal year(ended on March 21)

The Islamic Republic currently trades power with Turkey, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Tehran seeks to become a major regional exporter of electricity and has attracted more than $1.1 billion in investments for the construction of three new power plants.
