The construction of a major bridge in Iran which will connect Qeshm Island in the Persian Gulf to mainland is just 3 percent complete - 2.5 years after the project kicked off.

Akbar Torkan, Secretary of the Iranian Council for Coordination of Free and Special Economic Zones, said the Persian Gulf Bridge was scheduled to be inaugurated by March 2014, Iran's ILNA news agency reported on Sept. 22.

Some $1 billion was allocated to the project, but just $60 million has been spent so far, he said.

Khatam al-Anbiya construction base headquarters, affiliated to the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), is the project's contractor.

The Persian Gulf Bridge was originally agreed upon in 2011. Its length was planned to be 2.2 km.

The implementation of the Persian Gulf Bridge project will further boost national economy and facilitate the transit of goods.
