Currently 33 foreign airlines are operating in Iran, the Islamic Republic's Iran newspaper reported Oct. 29 citing the country's Civil Aviation Organization.

The foreign airlines transferred over 3 million passengers in Iran during the last fiscal year (ended on March 21), according to the report.

The risk of flying over conflict areas in the region, in particular in Iraq caused foreign airliners to find secure paths for their planes, so demands for flying across the Iran 's air space have risen unprecedentedly.

For the time being Iran 's air zone accepts over 950 transit flights from European and Asian countries every day.

The Islamic Republic earned $120 million via transit flights through its skies during the last fiscal year, and the figure is forecasted to increase by 100 percent in current year.

Deputy Director of Iran Civil Aviation Organization Mohammad Khodakarami said that currently the leading international airlines have flights to Iran, adding the demands for launching flights to Iran is increasing.

Deputy for Navigation of Iran Airports Company Ebrahim Shoushtari said that Iran 's sustainable airspace security in the region and existence of facilities and equipment required by air navigation are among reasons for the increase in the number of flights in the airspace of the country.

He said the deplorable air crash of the Malaysian airliner in Ukraine and recent incidents in Iraq have been remarkably effective in increasing transit flights over Iran 's air space, adding that for the first time in history the number of transit flights reached 1,015 on Oct 12.
