The head of the Iranian Airports Organization, Mohammad Ali Ilkhani said that only three Iranian airports meet their expenses - Mehrabad and Imam Khomeini International Airports in Tehran and Mashhad International Airport.

Currently incomes of 48 Iranian airports are not covering the expenses, Ilkhani said, the Islamic Republic's official IRNA news agency reported Nov. 13.

The administration has prepared some strategies to handle the problem in the sixth five-year economic development plan (2015-20), Ilkhani said.

Earlier Iranian media outlets quoted Ilkhani as saying the Iranian Airports Organization has paid about $14 million for loss making airports during the last fiscal year (ended on March 21).

Totally, 24.6 million passengers used Iran's domestic and international flights during the 6-month period from March 21 to Sept. 22).

The number of international flights to and from Iran has increased by 23 percent during the period.

Mohammad-Reza Abdorrahimi, the deputy director of the Iranian Airports Organization, said a total of 38,600 international flights landed in or took off from Iranian airports in the mentioned months.

A total number of 197,500 flights also passed Iran's air space in the 6-month period, which was 6 percent more than the same period previous year.
