Iran and Qatar signed a memorandum of understanding in Tehran, based on which Iran will send laborers to its southern neighbor.

Iran's Minister of Cooperative, Labor and Welfare Ali Rabiee and Qatar's Minister of Labor Abdullah Salih al-Khalifi signed the MOU, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on Dec. 3.

The two sides also agreed to set up a joint commission at deputy level to implement the agreements.

Iranian minister hailed the cordial ties between Iran and Qatar, saying that sending Iranian workforce to Qatar can reinforce social ties between the two countries.

The two ministers also agreed to set up a special committee to standardize labor regulations for the workforce.

Iranian Deputy Labor Minister Hassan Hefdahtan, has said that based on the Health Ministry's data, laborers have spent 40 percent of their wages for medical purposes over the past ten years.

He blamed improper economic policies that have been taken by the former administration for this situation, saying that the current administration is working on a new plan to restructure health and social welfare services.

Some 7 million people in Iran are living in absolute poverty and their food security is at risk.
