Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 13

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran inaugurated its most efficient power plant with more than 45 percent efficiency.

The power plant came on stream in the northern province of Mazandaran, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on Dec. 13.

It has been designed, built, and commissioned by domestic experts and has a power generation capacity of 25 megawatts.

The power plant was built over the course of eight months at a cost of 500 billion rials (about $14.5 million based on US dollar free market exchange rate of 34,000 rials).

Head of The Energy Commission of Iran's Parliament Ali Marvi said on Oct. 27 that the efficiency of Iranian power plants is only 37 percent, while the figure stands at 80 percent in developed countries.

"Transmission and distribution losses amount to 15 percent in Iran," he added.

Marvi went on to note that by increasing the power plants' efficiency, Iran would annually save 11 billion liters of liquid fuel, worth 4 billion euros.

Iranian energy Minister Hamid Chitchian said on November 29 that some of the old and worn-out power plants will be scrapped and the efficiency of other power plants will be improved.

Power generation capacity in Iran has grown by seven percent annually during the past 10 years.

Iran's total electricity generation currently stands at 70,000 megawatts.
