Tehran’s urban area limits decreased upon Supreme Leader's recommendation

The urban area of Tehran has been decreased from around 700 square kilometers to around 600 square kilometers as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei recommended.

Mehdi Chamran, Chairman of Tehran City Council, said that with regard to recommendations of the Supreme Leader on preventing from the expansion of Tehran, the city's area was decreased, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on Dec. 26.

In recent years, Ayatollah Khamenei has frequently emphasized the need to curb building construction at green spaces of Tehran.

Rahmatollah Hafezi, Chairman of the health committee of Tehran City Council, said some 4,500 hectares area of gardens around Tehran has been destructed over the past 20 years.

He added that residential and commercial buildings have been stretched across 60 percent of the city.

Pirouz Hanachi, Deputy Transport Minister, said in July that Tehran has reached its ceiling of population 12 years ahead of schedule. He put the city's population at 14 million.
