The average consumption per day amounted to 14.142 million liters, showing 357,000 liters per day increase week on week, Iran's official IRNA news agency reported Jan. 19.

Jan. 14 and 15 with 14.8 million liters per day, and Jan. 16 with 13.5 million liters recorded the highest and lowest rate of gasoline consumption in the mentioned period.

Iran's average gasoline consumption was around 66 million liters per day in the week to Jan. 16, some 1.37 million liters more compared to the preceding week.

Totally some 462.5 million liters of gasoline were consumed in Iran in the mentioned week, meanwhile the total gasoline consumption stood at 452.9 during the previous week.
The highest rate of daily gasoline consumption in the country during the mentioned week recorded on Jan. 15 with 72.9 million liters per day, meanwhile the lowest rate was recorded on Jan. 16 with 61 million liters of gasoline consumption per day.

Iran used to import 40 percent of its required gasoline in 2009. But international sanctions forced it to produce gasoline domestically by adding lead or some poisonous chemical catalysts such as MTBE to the product. MTBE is a highly poisonous substance that causes cancer. Its use is banned worldwide for gasoline production.

The administration of President Hassan Rouhani ordered stopping the distribution of substandard gasoline.
