Iran foresees 11 million tons of annual wheat production

Wheat production in Iran is forecast to hit 11 million metric tons in the current Iranian fiscal year, which began on March 21.

Esmaeil Esfandyari, the Iranian deputy agriculture minister, said that one million metric tons of wheat more than the past year will be purchased from farmers in the current year, Iran's Mehr news agency reported on April 7.

Therefore, 7.7 million metric tons of wheat will be purchased at a guaranteed price of 11,550 rials per kilogram, he added.

Esfandyari said in Feb. that some 6.2 million hectares of land in Iran are under the cultivation of wheat. He added that 2.35 million hectares of land are under irrigated farming and 3.85 million hectares of land are under dried farming.

The total area under the cultivation of wheat was increased by 2.6 percent compared to the year before, he noted.
