Greece has sent a Boeing 747-200 to Iran for repair, Iran Airports Co. Board of Directors Member Ahmad Momeni said.

A Greek Boeing 747-200 entered Iran for repair about five days ago. But since there was no room in Tehran's Mehrabad Airport maintenance sheds, the jumbo jet was told to land in Kerman (city in central Iran), Momeni said, IRNA news agency reported April 12.

He reiterated that the aircraft had entered Iran only to be repaired and there were no passengers on board.

He further said that the aircraft was ordered to leave Kerman for Tehran on April 12 in order to be repaired.

The news comes as a surprise when Iran's aviation industry is hugely grounded due to lack of resources for renovation.

On December 27, Deputy Minister of Road and Urban Development Mohammad-Ali Ilkhani said that financial problems and the sanctions imposed on Iran limits the airlines' ability to repair the planes.

Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Abbas Ahmad Akhoundi said on Dec. 20 that Iran had sent the engines of 14 airplanes to foreign countries in order to be repaired.

On July 24, AFP reported that Boeing has struck a deal with Iran Air to provide parts, making it the first time the U.S. firm did business with Iran since the U.S. embargo of 1979.

According to a regulatory filing published on July 23, Boeing will supply goods and services "related to the safety of flight" to Iran Air, the country's flag carrier.
