By Temkin Jafarov, Umid Niayesh - Trend:

Iran intends to transport gas from Turkmenistan, Iranian ambassador to Turkmenistan Mohammad Musa Hashemi Golpayegani told Trend.

He said Iran is open to the energy cooperation with its northern neighbors - Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.

He said the cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan in the energy sphere has historical roots and is developing from day to day.

The ambassador added that following the collapse of the USSR, Turkmenistan constructed its first gas pipeline to Iran and two more gas pipelines have been constructed to the border with Iran.

Hashemi Golpayegani added that Iran annually purchases 12-14 billion cubic meters of gas from Turkmenistan and both countries are interested in increasing this volume to 40 billion cubic meters.

The diplomat said Iran is ready to transport Turkmen gas through its territory, adding that Iran has technical opportunities, including a gas network for transporting in any direction.

The ambassador said that Iran and Turkmenistan have not yet discussed in what direction the transit of gas will be carried out, however, they supported the idea of transit itself.

He said that if Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan will cooperate in the energy sector, this partnership will turn them into the leading countries of the region.

Hashemi Golpayegani said that Iran is ready to start oil products exchange (swap) with its northern neighbors again.

Until 2009, Iran carried out swap of oil products with its northern neighbors from the port of Neka, but these operations have not been conducted for already six years. Iran's revenues from oil swap for 10 years amounted to $800 million, he said.

The ambassador said that in accordance with the agreements reached, the trade turnover between Iran and Turkmenistan will reach $60 billion during the next 10 years.
