Over 1.06 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran during the first month of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21- April 21).

The figure indicates an increase by 29 percent compared to the same month of preceding year, Mohammad Javad Atrchian, director general of Border Transit and Terminals of the Roads Maintenance and Transportation Organization of Iran said.

About 518,000 metric tons of the transited goods were oil products, meanwhile some 520,000 metric tons of non-oil goods were transited during the one-month period, Atrchian said, Iran 's Mehr news agency reported May 4.

The transited non-oil goods mostly consisted of chemicals, fuels and cotton, he said.

Atrchian further said that Parvizkhan border checkpoint in western province of Kermanshah port was the most active custom checkpoint in terms of transited goods into Iran, followed by Bandar Abbas port, Bashmaq and Bazargan border checkpoints.

Some 276,000 metric tons of goods, equaling 26 percent, were transited via Parvizkhan inside the country, the official said.

Imam Khomeini port with 434,000 metric tons was the top border point in terms of transiting goods to foreign countries followed by the port of Bandar Abbas, then Bazargan, Lotfabad and Sarakhs border checkpoints, Atrchian stated.

About 41 percent of the goods transited abroad exited from Imam Khomeini port.

He further said that the volume of transited goods could reach 15 million metric tons during the current Iranian fiscal year (will be ended on March 20, 2016) if necessary measures are taken on decreasing transit costs and time.

About 12 million metric tons of goods were transited via Iran in the past Iranian fiscal year (ended on March 20), indicating a 6.5 percent increase year on year.
