Cigarette production in Iran rises by 53%

Cigarette production in Iran rose by 53 percent in the first two months of the current Iranian fiscal year, which began on March 21.

Iranian Tobacco Company has announced that it will produce 15 billion cigarettes in the current year, Iran's ISNA news agency reported on May 26.

The company's output hit 1.765 billion cigarettes in the first two months of the year, a 53 percent rise year on year.

Last year, the company experienced a sharp fall in output, so that it produced just 9 billion cigarettes.

Nematollah Shahbazi, the deputy managing director of Iranian Tobacco Company, said the decline was mainly due to rampant smuggling and irregular imports.

Iranian Tobacco Company engages in the production and sale of tobacco products in Iran. The company's products include cigarettes as well as pipe tobacco. It exports its products primarily to the Middle East and Europe.
