Iran has started mass-production of artificial tears during a ceremony attended by the country's health minister, Hassan Ghazizadeh Hashemi.

The country needs 30 million dozes of artificial tears drop per year, meanwhile some 33 percent of the market demand will be covered by domestic production, Mohammad Hassan Vasefi, the managing director of Sina Darou Laboratories Company which is producing the drop said, Iran 's Fars news agency reported July 2.

He also said the company will increase its output, forecasting that the country will be self sufficient in artificial tears production by March 2017.

Meanwhile Rasoul Dinarvand, director of Iran 's Food and Drug Organization said that the health ministry would seek to decrease artificial tears' import to 5-10 percent of domestic demand, if the homemade products meet the needed quality.

Artificial tears are lubricant eye drops used to treat dryness and irritation associated with deficient tear production inkeratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome). They are also used to moisten contact lenses and in eye examinations.
