Electricity consumption in Iran hit 49,776 megawatts on July 6, which was a record high since the beginning of the current Iranian fiscal year (March 21), according to statistics of the Iranian Energy Ministry.

The peak of consumption on July 6, 2014 was 45,690 MW, ISNA news agency reported on July 8.

Iran's power plants stored 1,384 MW of electricity, while domestic industries consumed 3,327 MW of electricity.

During spring the actual power production capacity in Iran reached 46,824 MW, while this figure was 45,426 MW during the same period in the last year.

During last fiscal year, Iran added 2.87 gigawatts (GW) to its power generation capacity while for the current year growth in production of some 2.5 GW power is planned.

There is a huge power loss during the transmission and distribution process, which reaches around 56 billion Kwh (kWh - unit for measuring energy), or more than 20 percent of total actual electricity energy generation capacity.

Besides wasting the electricity in the network, the other major problem in Iran's power sector is the low efficiency of the country's power plants, which stands at 37 percent.
