Iran has held negotiations to swap 200 thousand metric tons of urea per year, Director of Production Control at the National Iranian Petrochemical Company Ali Mohammad Bosaqzadeh said.

Before the petrochemical industry was privatized in Iran, urea used to be imported from countries to the north of Iran to be used in northern provinces, and then urea was exported in the south of Iran, he added, SHANA news agency reported August 24.

He said Iran produced 1.308 million metric tons of urea in the four months of the current Iranian fiscal year (since March 21).

"The export of urea in the same period was one million metric tons, showing 365 thousand metric tons improvement compared to the same period of the preceding year," he further said.

Bosaqzadeh said Iranian petrochemical units producing urea are working at 84 percent of their nominal capacities.

He added that each year Iran consumes 1.8 to two million metric tons of urea.
