Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 22

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran, Afghanistan, and India will sign an agreement on establishing an international transit route, named Chabahar transit corridor.

The agreement is scheduled to be signed by presidents or ministers of the three countries in the near future, Iran's Fars news agency reported Sept. 22.

Mohammad Javad Atrchian, the director of transit department at Iran's Roads Maintenance Organization, said that the first meeting on establishing the Chabahar transit corridor is being held in Tehran.

The agreement will have a great effect on facilitating the transit of goods from India and Afghanistan via Iran's Chabahar port, he added.

In a meeting between Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Aug. 14, the two sides emphasized development of Chabahar Port as well as railway projects including the North-South Corridor.

India and Iran had signed a deal in May to develop the Chabahar port in southeast Iran, close to Pakistan's Gwadar port project.

China is determined to invest $660 million in Gwadar port, 50 kilometers away from Chabahar.

China signed a $46 billion investment with Pakistan in April, including $3.69 billion worth of roads and $5.9 billion railway projects in Pakistan.

On the other hand, Iran and India signed a $195 million deal to develop Chabahar port in May.
