By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iran and Uzbekistan have signed an agreement to apply discounts on the transit of goods by trains traveling between the two countries.

Islamic Republic of Iran Railways CEO Pour Seyyed Aghaei said the mutual agreement has been extended for the year 2016, as well.

The discounts cover goods Iran and Uzbekistan send through each other's territory for export to third countries, as well, the official said.

He added that the two countries have also held talks on opening the Incheh Borun border station.

"The tariff that we had settled beforehand was adopted in the session and it was agreed to, beginning with the transit of wheat right away," he stated.

According to Aghaei, Kazakhstan has agreed to send 400,000 metric tons of corn to Iran following the signing of the agreement.

In a session with the head of the joint Iran-Uzbekistan economy committee, officials also discussed the expansion of mutual trade, he noted.

Additionally, he said the sides discussed the four-way corridor between Iran, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Oman, where it was agreed to create a workgroup to coordinate affairs related to the corridor.

The trade turnover between Uzbekistan and Iran exceeded $250 million as of 2014, according to the Iranian embassy.

The governments of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Iran and Oman signed a memorandum in August 2014 on validating the agreement to create the Central Asia-Persian Gulf transport corridor.
