Thailand has expressed readiness to buy crude oil from Iran, once the international sanctions against Tehran are lifted, a senior Iranian official said.

Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce Suvit Maesincee discussed oil cooperation with Iranian deputy oil minister, Amir Hossein Zamaninia during a meeting in Tehran Nov. 23, Mehr news agency reported.

Following the meeting Zamaninia said that due to Thailand's growing need for energy, the Thai official voiced Bangkok's readiness to purchase oil from Iran in the post-sanctions period.

Zamaninia further said that Thailand can become Iran's gateway to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

He added that the two parties also discussed investment opportunities and joint economic cooperation.

Iran and Thailand will hold a joint economic commission in early 2016, Zamaninia added.

Trade between Iran and Thailand amounted to $371.92 million in the previous Iranian fiscal year, which ended on March 20, 2015, according to the Iran Customs Administration.

Bilateral trade totaled $217.55 million in the first seven months of the current Iranian fiscal year.
