The construction of three petrochemical projects in Iran is almost completed and the projects will come on stream in coming months, the Islamic Republic's oil ministry's official SNANA news agency reported Nov. 25.

The projects including the phase 2 of Kavian Petrochemical plant, Takht-e Jamshid Petrochemical complex as well as development project of Lorestan Petrochemical's linear, low and high density polyethylene plant are fully completed.

The three plants will come on stream in the current Iranian fiscal year(to be end March 21, 2016) in case of providing feedstock.

Kavian Petrochemical plant is the world's largest ethylene producing unit, according to Iranian officials. Once phase 2 of this massive complex comes into production, the total production capacity of the complex will exceed 2 million tons per year.

The first phase of the power plant of Damavand Petrochemical Company as well as mono ethylene glycol (MEG) unit of Morvarid Petrochemical plant are completed by almost 99 percent.

Construction of several other petrochemical units is underway in the country, according to the report.

Karoon Petrochemical Plant's second phase construction has made 98 percent physical progress and the project is developing as planned.

Marvdasht Petrochemical Plant and heavy and light polyethylene units of Mahabad Petrochemical Plant are also completed by 97 percent.

Iran's petrochemical output hit 44.4 million tons in the past Iranian fiscal year (ended on March 20), 10 percent more year-on-year.

The country's actual production capacity is around 60 million tons, but the shortage of natural gas as feedstock, old production units, and the problem of sanctions, which has dropped exports, have caused petrochemical complexes to work at lower capacities.

Iranian petrochemical plants use 37 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, while Iran could deliver only 2.8 million tons of ethane to plants during last year totally. The country planned to increase this volume to 4.2 million tons in current fiscal year.
