By Khalid Kazimov - Trend:

The barter of iron with foreign countries such as China has harmed Iran's domestic iron producers, an Iranian official said.

Head of Iranian trade union for iron, Mohammad Azad said that the domestic iron producing companies have become idle as a result of barter and what he termed as "compulsory sale" of iron, ISNA news agency reported Nov.29.

Azad noted that Tehran imports iron from foreign countries, while homemade iron is cheaper and qualified than the imported ones.

The iron production has improved in Iran and the quality of Iranian iron is higher than the Asian and European products, he added.

He said that in case the country opens the doors for importing iron from Asian and European countries, it will harm the domestic production.

Iran exported three million tons of iron and steel within the first half of 2015. While the country produced 8.5 million tons of iron and steel, 5.5 tons of the total amounts were sold domestically.

China dominates on the country's steel market, ISNA news agency reported in September.

Iran's annual crude steel exports is planned to reach four million tons by early 2016, while the country's crude steel output is projected to increase to 18 million tons.

Steel production rose by 6 percent and 6.6 percent in Iran in 2014 and 2013 and the country was the biggest producer of crude steel in the Middle East in 2013.
