Tehran and Muscat are currently discussing to finalize a deal to export Iran's gas to Oman through a pipeline from Jask Port, an Iranian deputy oil minister, Hamid Reza Araqi, said.

The deputy minister said that Iran will open a 48-inch diameter branch pipeline from the seventh cross-country pipeline, a part of Peace Pipeline, to deliver gas to Oman, Mehr news agency reported Nov 30.

Iran and Pakistan signed a gas agreement under former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahamadinejad, which according to, Pakistan was set to import 22 million cubic meters per day (mcm/d) of natural gas from Iran through the Peace Pipeline as of 2015. However Pakistan has not yet managed to establish its section of the pipeline.

According to Araqi the pipeline will be laid under sea after completing the terrestrial part and it will cross from Iran's Jask Port to Oman.

He added that the construction of the pipeline will be launched once the deal is inked.

During a 23 November meeting Iran's Petroleum Minister Bijan Zagjaneh and his Omani counterpart, Mohammed Hamad al-Rumhi, discussed exporting the Islamic republic's natural gas to global markets after liquefying at Oman's LNG plants.

Iran has already signed a Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Oman to deliver 10 billion cubic meters per annum (mcm/a) of gas through an underwater pipeline to that country.

The onshore part stretches from Iran's city of Rudan for 200 kilometers to Kuhmobarak and the project is planned to be commenced in 2016-2017.

Iran has a 50-percent developed LNG plant, with 10.5 million tons (or above 14 billion cubic meters natural gas) of production capacity annually, which is expected to become operational by 2019.
