Tehran, Iran, January 27

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Iran is going to import ten second-hand Airbus and Boeing passenger aircraft by March, Deputy Director of Iran Civil Aviation Organization (CAO) Mohammad Javad Taghavi said.

He also said Iranian companies have reached an agreement with European financiers on airplane purchase, Mehr news agency reported January 27.

Taghavi said the airplanes are between five and ten years old. The average age of Iran's existing fleet is 25.

The official underlined that foreign companies are very interested in the Iranian market for its high value added rate. He went on to say not only European, but American companies are seeking a place in the Iranian aviation market.

According to Taghavi, 114 Airbus planes are to be imported to Iran in five years.

Iranian officials previously claimed the country needs about 500 airplanes within 10 years to refurbish its decrepit aviation fleet.

Iran previously was not able to renovate its ageing fleet due to sanctions on new aircraft and spare parts.
