By Fatih Karimov - Trend:

Iran has approved $8 billion of assets to improve border water management, Hamid Adl, an official with Iran's Agriculture Ministry said.

Adl said the money which will be drawn from the National Development Fund, will be spent in a course of four years to improve border water management, IRNA news agency reported.

The money will be used to construction of dams and enhance irrigation and drainage networks neighboring the country's border rivers, he added.

Iran is situated in an arid area and faces severe shortage of water after years of scanty precipitation and unbridled consumption of ground and underground waters.

Agricultural and industrial sectors combined are responsible for 94 percent of the water consumed in Iran.
